Wiring Weekenders

Wow, what an interesting weekend. Like I said last week – our plan this weekend was to get Wes’ Room wired since the insulation was being sucked out of the attic Friday. That way it would be easier for Greg to crawl up there with out having to crawl on top of all the nasty(s) that the Raccoons had hauled into the attic.

Yes, we’ve learned after problems with the heating that Raccoons had taken over the vacancy of this old farm house and completely annihilated the attic of the house. Tearing apart duct work, building nests, chewing through a new roof… not to mention all of the bacteria and waste they left behind.

Earlier in December Greg climbed up on the roof, closed and patched the area the little buggers were getting in at. So we were pretty certain that we had kept them from getting back in.

Friday we had Shawn from Shawn Saunders Insulation come suck out the remaning insulation in the attic. At about 12:00 Shawn was talking with Greg in our kitchen when suddenly he stops, listening to his ear piece, (he and the guy working in the attic have a radio system) and says “There’s a Coon up there!” I stand there watching Greg and Shawn look at each other trying to figure out what to do.

After a bit of discussion and looking around the ideas changed from, bat, shovel…

No, Gun.

Me: “Greg? Your 45?”

Greg : “No that will blow a hole in the side of the house…”

Shawn: Do you have a 22?

Greg: “Yeah that might work…”

(Funny enough this was just after Greg and Shawn were talking guns and Greg laid his AR 15 on my counter) Boys and their toys…

& If you haven’t notice by now this house definitely exercises the Second Amendment

Phew, now that we’ve got that out of the way….

Needless to say:

This was a BIG BOY… I figured that once we had shut them out, kept them from getting in… and were now living in the house – they wouldn’t bother. Apparently not. I am now learning that once they build a nest they don’t like to give it up… YUCK.

Don’t get me wrong. We love & appreciate animals around here but we really don’t like living with rodents or vermin’s in our house. NO THANKS!

As for now, no more Raccoons but you better believe we are keeping our eyes peeled and every time Ellie Barks we jump!

Any way… I should back up further and explain that the reason Wes’ Room needs to be rewired is because it’s plywood. Floor to ceiling. Why you ask? Well that’s because in 2002 this house was part of a drug raid in where this house was being used at a Marijuana operation. So we lovingly call Wes’s soon to be room – The Weed Room. ;)

I’m realizing how horrible UN PC this post is becoming… If you are in any way offended, well thanks for stopping by! ;)

Now the plan is to rip out the plywood and then start the drywall. The room is HUGE (19×16) so we’ve decided to break the room up with a hallway and some much, much, much needed closet space. Below you can see where Saturday we taped off the hallway on the left, then the linen closet, then Wes’ Closet. (Pardon all of the other crap lying around)

Greg and my Dad wired for outlets, switches and light fixtures. As you can see, the plywood was screwed right over the plaster… NO Insulation. That’s why as I type Shawn from Shawn Saunders Insulation is insulating the outside walls. :)

Thankfully, excitement aside, the wiring was pulled through from the attic and the insulation will soon be replaced in the attic. Then we can start tearing apart the plywood.

As I was writing this post our contractor called and will be starting our Stairway Project Feburary 11th! Wahoo!!!! More to come on that!

Lots going on… it’s exciting to have things rolling in the Drane House!
