We have begun the Staircase Project & are moving along nicely with the Weed Room (Wes’s Room)!
What a crazy weekend and last couple of days. Dust, crazy kids, sick kids, more dust, cleaning, crazy kids, more dust, more cleaning… thankfully my girlfriend let the kids and I come hide out at her house on Monday to avoid the mess. The kids and I are confined to either the kitchen or the Master Bed Room. 3 kids, (5, 3, & 1) in that small of space – with dust and dangerous tools and missing steps at every turn… NOT so fun. But, we are dealing and I keep telling myself it will all be worth it in the end!
Here is what is on the agenda for this part of the remodel.
Tear out and Finish (Drywall) Wes’s Room
- In that room we will remove 3 windows and replace them in different positions.
- Build a Hallway to his room
-Build a Linnen Closet in the hallway
-Build a Walk in Closet in his room
Restructure and Rebuild the Upstairs and Basement Stair Case.
-Open the Stair Case 2 Stories
-Rebuild steps to widen and bring up to code with the step size
-Move the Door to the basement staircase.
-Open and replace existing Covered Up Window
-Cover and replace Window at the Bottom of the stairs -Replace with a smaller fitted appropriate window
-Dry Wall Upper Living Room
Last Friday we tore out the existing Stairway. Here is what we tore out.

Probably the biggest part of the demo was opening up the floor/ceiling to open the upstairs living room to the stairway and down to the 1st floor.

Greg removed the wood flooring:

Only to discover what was once a working BEE HIVE in the floor joists.

After we removed the flooring and floor joists then we removed the plaster and had to cut out the drywall ceiling below. Poor Greg stood on a ladder holding the piece of drywall as I was cutting it.
We were trying our best to keep the mess down. Living in an inch of dust on everything is NOT my idea of a good time.
(But don’t think for a second that every bone in my body wasn’t wanting to smash, tear, rip, it all apart to take out any remodel frustrations I’ve been building up!) – I did get to do that on the dry wall in the stair way. I kicked that through to the other side – All the while Greg telling me to chill before I kicked through the plastic on the other side! Ha ha!
This is what this week’s progress towards the rebuild looks like:

We are ALMOST ready for drywall. Just need to frame in the closets and hallway in Wes’s Room and cut for a window at the bottom of the stairs.
The kids and I are limping through on our mess. They’ve learned to wear shoes and to shut doors in the rooms that are not being worked on to keep the dust from spreading.
Just like Dori on Finding Nemo – “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”
